Now that you have identified what you love and don’t love, how do you translate that information into a defined style?  I’m going to identify four decorating styles and what characteristics make up each style.  See which of these most sounds like you:

Sophisticated Classic:  You are mostly drawn to timeless pieces and luxurious fabrics like silk and velvet.  You love an elegant blend of refined traditional furniture, jewelry-like accessories, and pale colors.  Clean Art Deco shapes may appeal to you.  This style evokes a more formal lifestyle.  Think Grace Kelly and Tiffany & Co.  You are attracted to grand chandeliers, rich, dark woods, symmetrical furniture arrangements, elegant accessories and accents made of metal, glass, and marble, and delicate furniture pieces with tapered legs and feminine lines.

Modern Graphic:  You love a fresh, fun, contemporary look that might combine urban styling, like a downtown loft, with edgy, colorful accents and mid-century design.  Simple furniture forms with clean lines and no extra embellishments, with plain legs and skirtless bases appeal to you.  Bold blocks of saturated color and graphics, geometrics or abstract patterns.  Think Andy Warhol posters.  You like a mix of light and dark woods and are comfortable with asymmetrical furniture and accessory placement.

Cozy Casual:  Warm, traditional and relaxing defines this style.  Drawing on English and Early American furniture styles, as well as country, cottage and farmhouse styles.  Furnishings are weathered, low-maintenance, and comfy.  You love slip covers, rolled arms, warm wood tones, and painted or distressed finishes.  Natural fibers like cotton, wool and sisal and farmhouse or trestle style tables appeal to you.

Vintage Eclectic:  A rich, layered look combining flea market finds with furniture from different periods.  Accessories and artwork are diverse, layered and have a collected appearance.  Furniture is shapely and feminine, detailed and weathered.  Fabrics are mixed, from paisleys to florals to ethnic and folk prints.  Lamps and chandeliers are embellished with beads, crystals and tassels.
