Before long we will be exchanging our tank tops and flip flops for sweaters and boots!  Before the first frost hits the pumpkins, there are some easy projects we should consider to get our homes ready for cooler temperatures.

Adding layers like fuzzy throws, textural pillows, flannel bedding and plush area rugs will not only make us feel warmer but can actually save on energy costs by allowing us to turn down the thermostat.  I put away my cotton and linen textiles and pull out suede, velvet, corduroy and wool.  The more, the better for snuggling!

Since the air is much drier in the cooler months, I like to pamper my furniture with a little extra TLC, polishing the wood pieces and cleaning the leather sofas with leather cleaner.  Be sure you know how your furniture finishes have been treated or sealed so that you can choose the proper products.  Your furniture will reward you by being beautiful for many years to come.

Check the weather stripping on doors and windows to keep the warm air in and the cold out.  And be sure to regularly check roof valleys and gutters for debris and leaves that could cause an overflow.

By getting your furnace and fireplace checked now instead of waiting until you really need them, you can be sure they are safe and ready to keep you warm and toasty.  Then all you’ll need to do is warm some cocoa and get ready to curl up with a good book!
